How it works
How the score you need is calculated
Score needed on the final = (target grade − current grade × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight
Write the weight as a decimal, so a 35% final is 0.35. With 85.77% now and a 35% final, a B+ (87%) takes (87 − 85.77 × 0.65) ÷ 0.35 = 89.3% on the final.
Over 100% means that grade is out of reach on the final alone. Zero or less means it's already locked in. Your syllabus sets the real letter cutoffs and rounding, so use its numbers if they differ from the common scale here.
The final grade guide works through the same example by hand, including where the 85.77% comes from. Once your grades are in, the GPA calculator shows what they do to your GPA.
FAQ
Final grade questions
How do I calculate the grade I need on my final?
Score needed on the final = (target grade − current grade × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight, with the weight as a decimal. The calculator above does this for every letter grade at once.
What does "out of reach" mean?
The score needed is over 100%, so that grade can't be reached on the final alone. Aim one letter lower, and ask your professor about extra credit or work you can still submit.
My class uses points, not percentages. Does this work?
Yes. Switch to Points and enter the points you've earned, the class's total points and what the final is worth. For example, 680 of 1,000 points earned with a 200-point final needs 120 points, or 60%, for an 80%.
What if other assignments are still ungraded?
The calculator assumes the final is the last thing left. If a project or homework is still out, estimate your score on it and fold it into your current grade (or your points earned) first.
Does the calculator save my grades?
No. It runs in your browser and nothing you type is saved or sent. To keep every class's grade and the score you need updated all semester, use Arcavelo's free planner.
Arcavelo does this for every class.
It keeps each class's syllabus weights and shows the score you need on whatever's left, updated every time a grade comes in. It's free.
