How it works
How your GPA is calculated
Your GPA is your total quality points divided by your total graded credit hours. Each class's quality points are its grade points times its credits, so a 4-credit class counts more than a 1-credit lab. Classes without a grade are left out, not counted as zeros.
The GPA guide walks through a full example by hand, and what grade do I need on my final? shows how to work out a single class grade first.
| Letter grade | Grade points |
|---|---|
| A | 4.0 |
| A- | 3.7 |
| B+ | 3.3 |
| B | 3.0 |
| B- | 2.7 |
| C+ | 2.3 |
| C | 2.0 |
| C- | 1.7 |
| D+ | 1.3 |
| D | 1.0 |
| D- | 0.7 |
| F | 0.0 |
FAQ
GPA calculator questions
How do I calculate my GPA?
Multiply each class's grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0 and so on) by its credit hours, add them up, and divide by your total graded credit hours. The calculator above does this as you type.
How do I calculate my cumulative GPA?
Add the quality points from every semester and divide by every semester's graded credits. In the calculator, open "Add your earlier semesters" and enter your GPA so far and the credits behind it.
Does the calculator save my grades?
No. It runs in your browser and nothing you type is saved or sent. To keep your grades and GPA updated all semester, use Arcavelo's free planner.
What scale does the calculator use?
The standard 4.0 scale with plus and minus grades: A is 4.0, A- is 3.7, B+ is 3.3, down to F at 0.0. A few colleges count an A+ as 4.3 or don't use minus grades, so check your catalog.
Should I include pass/fail classes or withdrawals?
Usually not. At most colleges a Pass or a W (withdrawal) doesn't count toward GPA, so leave those classes out.
